Originally named 'Raj', Wakanui was built in the late 1980's for the owner of the Bristol boat yard in Rhode Island. It was a demonstration of the ability of the yard to build more than the reliable blue-water cruising boats they had become renowned for, and enter the market of 'super yachts'.
Many years later when we were searching for sensible boat to take our family sailing, perhaps around the world, we kept coming across her in our searches. Not a sensible boat at all given her size, her location in Port Vila, Vanuatu, and the amount of work to be done to get her back in sea-worthy condition, but we seem to be suckers for a project.
Four years later she had her engines up and running again, had been delivered to Brisbane and hauled out and scrubbed down, and we had moved aboard. A family of four (plus a boat cat) aboard an 84ft yacht and the adventure had begun.
